THE GROOVY SHROOM
This project was part of a course called Construction Documents, where we were tasked with designing either a restaurant or a spa for our final project. Having previously designed a restaurant in a drawing class, I decided to take a fresh approach and create an updated version using digital tools. One of the key requirements was that most, if not all, of the decor and furniture had to be custom-designed, which gave me the perfect opportunity to experiment with unconventional materials.
For this project, I chose New Haven, Connecticut, as the site—an area known for its growing trend of unique and aesthetically-driven dining experiences. I wanted to capture the vibrant energy of this movement, so I drew inspiration from what Gen Z might call "dopamine design"—a style focused on joy, color, and sensory stimulation.
I designed and crafted several key pieces for the space, including mushroom-shaped stools, lilypad-inspired tables, soft pink fur half-circles, a custom bar, and unique booths. Incorporating playful materials like turf ceilings, plush fur, and velvet chairs, I brought a touch of whimsy and boldness to the design. Not bad for my first time venturing into furniture and custom design!
